Heavy haulage trucks have to go, say residents

BLOCKED: Residents say the trucks are causing drivers to travel across the centre line to get past. Times photo Laura Brookes.

Residents of Armoy Drive are calling for the prompt removal of heavy haulage trucks parked along their street.

For the past six weeks, the parked trucks have been a major safety hazard to drivers, said Terry Nash who petitioned the case to the Howick Local Board at Monday’s meeting.

“Any vehicle coming toward Smales Road has to be over the centre line of the road,” he said, when explaining the issue to board members.

“We [as residents] are being adversely affected by this activity in a residential zone… they’re a danger to people going along our roads.”

A neighbour of Mr Nash’s also attended the meeting and confirmed there is always at least one truck positioned there day and night, if not two or three trucks.

“They’re using the main public road as a yard, and we don’t believe that’s acceptable in terms of the zone it’s in,” he said.

Mr Nash believes the “persistent presence” of the trucks, parked immediately adjacent to a children’s play park, indicate that a business activity is most likely being conducted in the residential area, which Howick Local Board chairman David Collings confirmed would be in breach of a bylaw.

Mr Collings said the Board would contact the appropriate authorities and work toward a resolution of the issue.
