Bring on the Petal Heads, Rastafairies

PREQUEL: HYCT delivers two productions next week. Photo supplied.

Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre has a line-up of two fabulous new productions taking place next week – Patch and Badjelly the Witch.

The outdoor performance of Patch will be the world premiere of the production, written by local Howick musician and author Kay Shacklock, who has also written a book based on the play.

It is a prequel to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which rival fairy gangs the Rastafairies and the Petal Heads get up to midnight mischief in the forest.

Patch director Kelly Scott says the production will be suitable for young and old alike.

The well-known story of Badjelly the Witch will also be performed by staff of the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre over the same weekend.

Badjelly tells the story of two children, Tim and Rose, who are searching for their cow Lucy, after she is stolen by Badjelly the Witch.

They meet quirky, bizarre characters along the way who help them and end up rescuing their cow from Badjelly the Witch and Dulboot, with the help of Dinglemouse and Jim the Eagle.

It’s a “super fun production for kids and families to come along and see”, said Ms Scott, and she hopes the audience will agree.

  • Patch: March 2-5, 8pm. Tickets $10.  It is suitable for children 5 years and older.
  • Badjelly the Witch: March 4-5, 11am and 1pm. Tickets $8. Suitable for children 5 years and older.
  • Both productions will be held outdoors at Star of the Sea Park, 29 Granger Road, Howick.
  • Contact HCYT on hcyt@xtra.co.nz or 537-4943 to book tickets.
