The Burn Support Charitable Trust is this year bringing Annual Children’s Burn Camp back to Auckland.
It is to be held at Willow Park Christian Camp at Eastern Beach starting on January 22 for five days of workshops, activities, confidence building and fun for 36 burn survivor children from throughout the country.
The yearly event – known as Camp Awhi – provides a secure environment to nurture and raise the self-esteem of young burn survivors, promoting a positive attitude while encouraging a healthy independence, said Michele Henry, the charity’s events co-ordinator/office administrator.
“Children sustaining burn injuries come from throughout New Zealand for this unique camp which ensures a wonderful experience which is invariably the highlight of the year for many of them,” Henry said.
“Camp Awhi is a five-day camp for children aged 7 -17 years. It is an opportunity to make genuine connections with others, re-discover the fun in physical fitness, learn their own strengths and find their own voices.
“Along with a whole lot of fun, the children engage in confidence-building workshops, build life-long relationships, inspire and encourage each other with tremendous support.”
The Burn Support Group (BSG) is a non-profit organisation that provides the camp at no cost to those attending.
“None of this is possible without the incredible and generous support of the local organisations and general public who donate, provide services and give their time to this terrific event,” said Henry.
“The charity is extremely grateful to the amazing leaders and support team who assist in the schedule and running of the camp.
“The BSG would like to thank Southern Stars, the Lions Foundation and the Local Howick Board for funds received contributing to 2021 Camp Awhi.”
