Students in east Auckland will be showcasing their eco-friendly wearable art on the fashion runway.

The Eye on Nature Wearable Arts Fashion Show is at the

Vodafone Events Centre on Thursday June 24 with $3500 in cash prizes.

There are 87 entries from primary and secondary schools across Auckland.

The schools representing east Auckland include Beachlands School, Somerville Intermediate, Bucklands Beach Intermediate, Mission Heights Junior College and Ormiston Junior College.

The show is “a search for Auckland’s most promising, environmentally-conscious young artists and designers” and is organised by the Beautification Trust, a charitable trust that coordinates environmental education, community events and beautification projects such as the fashion show.

Beachlands School was visited by the trust earlier this month to help build knowledge and understanding around the wearable arts theme and sustainable practices. The students were asked to create an outfit for a peg doll using environmentally-friendly resources.

When asked about the wearable arts project, the students were energized. “They were very engaged and excited to share their findings with us,” the trust’s community educator Sterling Ruwhiu says.

The showcase will give students the change to model their creations on a runway in front of a live audience.

Thirty four students from Beachlands School are involved. They are working in small groups and creating eight costumes in all.
