Pakuranga athletes shine at Colgate Games

Pakuranga Athletic Club junior athletes performed with distinction at the recent North Island Colgate Games in Wellington.

In its 44th year, the North Island Colgate Games hosted more than 1100 junior athletes from 78 different athletics clubs around New Zealand.

Pakuranga athletes in the 10-14 age group won an outstanding 20 individual medals, including three to 10-year-old Unaisi Cava (gold in 100m and 200m, and silver in long jump).

Pakuranga was particularly strong in the racewalk events, its athletes winning five of the 10 gold medals on offer.

And in the relays, Pakuranga picked up medals in both the 4x100m and mixed medley events, including gold to the 10 Girls team of Skye Wilson, Unaisi Cava, Tia Korewha and Giselle Campbell, whose time of 58.29 seconds broke the Auckland Resident record.

The 10 7-9 year olds in the team won a massive 27 1st, 2nd or 3rd place pennants between them, including five gold pennants to seven-year-old Alyssia Vaili.

Fifteen Pakuranga athletes will be travelling on to attend the South Island Colgate Games in Invercargill.

Colgate’s sponsorship of the Games is believed to be the longest continuous sports sponsorship in the world.

Club nights for all junior athletes (2-14 year olds) commence for 2022 on January 19 at the Yvette Williams Track at Lloyd Elsmore Park. New members are very welcome.
