Gymnasts descend on Howick

A record 568 competitors from across Auckland competing in the three-day event in Howick over the Matariki weekend.

The Howick Gymnastic Club’s annual recreational gymnastics competition has attracted a record number of entries this year.

This year the Howick Gymnastic Club has seen 568 competitors from across Auckland competing in the three-day event – compared to around 400 gymnasts in previous years – designed to give the region’s recreational gymnasts a chance to show off the skills they have been practising all year.

“This is a big time of the year for gymnastics when competitions are held nationwide for gymnasts of all levels,” says Howick Gymnastic Club centre manager Monique Gapes.

“It’s fantastic that our recreational event has attracted so many entries this year. That’s great for our club and great for the sport. Competitions are an important fundraiser for the club that relies on the support of the community to keep operating.”

Boys and girls aged 5-17-years-old have competed in artistic gymnastics this Matariki weekend [June 24-26] and were judged on the skills they have mastered, artistry and form.

This year – as well as artistic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling – there was for the first time rhythmic gymnastics.

“It’s a chance for the competitors to show off their routines, for parents to see the progress their children have made and for everyone to have some fun which is so important in keeping kids excited and motivated about sport,” Gapes says.

“The last 2.5 Covid years have tested the club, which has been a part of the local community for more than 40 years,” says Gapes.

“We’re thrilled and very grateful that this competition is so well supported and invite anyone interested in gymnastics to drop by the club for information.”
