20km on a single wheel

Sam Wallace of Mellons Bay is ready to go for the World Vision 40 Hour Famine.

Saint Kentigern College has been part of the 40 Hour Famine since 1984 and has raised more than $2 million.

This year the project is supporting Vanuatu.

Money raised will provide farmers with the seeds, tools and education they need to build sustainable farming practices and resilient communities.

This will help combat the high percentage of malnutrition amongst their children.

The school traditionally does a 20km walkathon from the college to Musick Point and back.

Traditionally, the 40 hour famine is to go without food, but more commonly kids are encouraged to take on challenges such as going without electricity or attempting something they would not normally do.

Year 9 Saint Kentigern College student Sam Wallace, 13, and his friend Cooper Thomas are going to join the walkathon and ride their unicycles for the 20km.

So far Wallace has raised $250, his goal is $500. The link to sponsor him is https://my.worldvision.org.nz/ss/YFIJSu/sam-wallace [or look up worldvision.org.nz click givenow 40 hour famine and search for Sam Wallace].

Wallace started unicycling in February this year when his grandmother gave him a unicycle for his birthday. While it seemed impossible at first, it has become second nature and he recommends other kids try out this fun sport.
