Sharon Stewart says she’s standing for re-election as a Howick ward councillor at this year’s Auckland Council elections to continue serving the community she loves.
The experienced east Auckland local body politician received a Queen’s Service Medal for Public Services in 1998.
She says she’s lived locally most of her life and her family history within the district goes back more than 100 years.
“I am an honest, straight-talking councillor with extensive local government experience. I’m passionate about the heritage of the Howick ward,” says Stewart.
“My voting record shows I have consistently voted against issues I believe will have a detrimental impact on the people of Howick.”
Stewart says she voted against mayor Phil Goff’s final budget as it involved serious rates increases yet still had a “massive deficit”.
She also voted against the introduction of Maori wards in Auckland in 2025.
“I believe Maori are more than capable of participating in the democratic process without needing to be assigned seats based on race.”
And Stewart says she voted against the removal of private vehicle parking on residential streets in order to accommodate busways and cycle lanes.
“I am vehemently opposed to the Government’s new housing infrastructure regime and I am totally opposed to its Three Waters reform,” she says.
“Both of these measures will, I believe, destroy Auckland.
“With a new mayor and like-minded councillors we could get Auckland moving in the right direction again.
“I am singularly focused on protecting the safety and well-being of the community by implementing increased crime prevention measures.
“I support our ratepayer and residents’ associations and I listen carefully to their concerns.”
Stewart says the welfare of senior citizens is a cause close to her heart.
People on fixed incomes cannot keep paying higher and higher rates bills, she says.
“I will advocate for improved public transport where it makes sense and strongly support the need to prioritise Auckland Transport planning and spending.
“We must retain neighbourhood parks and believe now more than ever we need green space for future generations.”
Stewart promises to promote accountability for council planning and spending so ratepayers’ money is used in the best ways possible.
“It is, after all, your money and it needs to be spent very wisely,” she says.
“Value for money in all council spending is vital.
“I was honoured to receive a Queen’s Service Medal for Public Service in Howick.
“Lastly, I am committed to serving you, the residents of Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and Flat Bush.
“I offer experience, dedication, and integrity.”
The council elections are being held on Saturday, October 8.
