The University of Washington has awarded Year 13 Macleans College student Vivian Lu (Batten House) with an athletic financial aid scholarship.

The golfer signed the scholarship documents at Macleans College in the office of principal Steven Hargreaves on Tuesday, November 15.

The four-year full scholarship covers tuition fees, room and board at campus rates, the cost of course-related books, personal expenses and transportation.

Lu is a high-achieving player who aspires to be a professional golfer in the next few years a dream which began in primary school. She has spent thousands of hours practicing and training and has acquired the skills, alongside physical and mental strength to perform at a very high level on the New Zealand golf circuit.

All signed up, from left, Macleans College principal Steven Hargreaves, Vivian Lu, Vivian’s father Andy Lu and Macleans College golf team manager Anand Rao.

Since 2018, Lu has been a member of the Macleans College premier golf team and is the current co-captain. She was instrumental in Macleans College winning the national golf title in 2018 and 2019. Lu has won the Macleans College Sportswoman of the Year award for the last five years. She has been in the New Zealand Women’s Golf team for the past four years. This year she is a member of the tier one team.

Some of Vivian Lu’s achievements for 2022:
First – New Zealand Women’s Amateur Stroke Play (back-to-back titles)
First – North Island Under 19s
First – South Island Stroke Play Championship
First – Otago Stroke Play Championship
First – New Zealand Foursomes
Second – Adidas Junior 6s Tour
First – Muriwai Open in the women’s field

Meanwhile, Lu was again part of the Auckland team which became the first district to win six New Zealand Women’s Interprovincials in a row, defeating North Harbour in Saturday’s final at Omanu Golf Club.

After comfortably defeating Bay of Plenty in the semi-final on Saturday, Auckland lined up against North Harbour for a classic battle of the bridge clash, which they won by a narrow margin of 3 – 2.

Auckland co-captains Caryn Khoo and Lu say it’s amazing to get across the line again, especially without one of their star players, Fiona Xu.

“This will also be my last interprovincial as I head to college next year, so it’s nice to finish on a high and get another victory for the province that I love,” said Lu.
