The city’s top young classical musicians are bringing their talents to east Auckland for an all-ages public concert this month.

The Auckland Youth Orchestra’s (AYO) Sibelius, Nielsen, Glass musical showcase is being staged at All Saints Anglican Church in Howick.

It’s presented in association with the Thursdays @ Seven concert series of Howick’s Peter and Katharine Watts.

The AYO says the musical selected performed will be “quirky, delightful, and magnificent”.

“Conducted by Antun Poljanich, Philip Glass – Symphony for Eight (Cellos) – an unusual sight at a symphony concert with just eight cellos on the stage.

“This short, rhythmic work is in fact the third movement of Glass’s third symphony, recreated as a cello octet.

“Nielsen – Concerto for Flute, with soloist Alina Chen.

“This delightful work, written by Denmark’s most important composer, is performed by 18-year-old Alina Chen who was a soloist in the 2023 NZSO Young Artists Showcase and the winner of the 2023 AYO Soloist Competition.

“Sibelius – Symphony No.2. The concert presents music not only from Denmark’s greatest composer, but also Finland’s – Jean Sibelius.

“This famous symphony received an overwhelmingly enthusiastic reception at its 1902 premiere and has become the most-recorded of Sibelius’s works.”

The concert is from 7.30pm-9.15pm on Saturday, June 15, at All Saints Anglican Church, 17 Selwyn Road, Howick. Entry is by donation.
