Thinking ‘Global’, acting locals

All the world is a stage but only a select few can claim crowning glories when the curtain falls.

Due to their outstanding performances, three local students – Chloe Miller (Saint Kentigern College), Finn O’Sullivan and Aria Takle-Lee (Howick College) – have been selected to perform at the National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP) in September.

Among the brightest stars at the recent SGCNZ Shakespeare Festival in Wellington, the trio were not alone in, measure for measure, making much ado about something.

Representing the Auckland South and East region, locals claimed a slew of awards including Outstanding Presentation from a Comedy, Excellence in Clowning and more.

“We are thrilled to announce that our talented Howick College students came away with four awards,” Howick College says.

“Congratulations to all our students on their incredible achievements. Thanks also go to Mrs Dryden (Head of Department, Drama) for her fabulous encouragement and support.”

Although performers took centre stage at the festival, held over King’s Birthday weekend, the wider programme included workshops, talks and more, all designed to encourage youngsters to embrace the performing arts and explore their contemporary relevance.

“We aim to educate through delving into Shakespeare’s text,” SGCNZ chief executive Dawn Sanders says.

“At the same time [we are] encouraging curiosity and re-envisaging with relevance to issues, whether current or historical, such as wars, religion, power, and the human psyche.”
