Iconic east Auckland bar and grill Fisher House is “temporarily closed”.

The popular eatery, located in Highbrook, was closed when the Times visited it tonight and the car park was empty.

A notice has been attached to its front door that states: “Owing to circumstances beyond our control, we regret to advise that Fisher House is now closed.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.”

The notice is signed ‘Fisher House’ and the word “temporary” has been handwritten at the bottom of it.

The restaurant’s website was still online tonight and its Facebook page was last updated 13 hours ago.

There was no explanation for the establishment’s temporary closure on either the website or Facebook page as of 8.25pm tonight, July 31.

Its website explains some of the iconic building’s history.

“Fisher House is located in the historical Ra Ora stud homestead, constructed in 1962 by Sir Woolf and Lady Fisher,” it states.

“The homestead is part of their expansive 177-acre racing horse stud farm. In September 1960, this remarkable estate was acquired from Ross Girling Ross, previously serving as an apple farm.

“During the 1960s and 70s, Fisher House hosted an elite roster of notable figures, including the esteemed Queen Mother herself.

“Sir Woolf achieved great success as the leader of the iconic New Zealand company Fisher and Paykel, and Ra Ora gained fame in the realm of horse racing.

“Furthermore, Fisher House became a hub for influential decision-making and an emblem of sophisticated living.

“Designed with entertainment in mind, the house boasts a grand entrance hall with an elegantly curved staircase.

“The former billiards room that once housed Sir Woolf’s full-sized billiards table now hosts conferences and intimate dining events.

“In addition to that, Fisher House boasts a cozy study, intimate drawing room, spacious dining area, well-appointed bar and a stunning garden terrace.

“Fisher House has undergone thoughtful renovations to preserve its original features and enhance its charm.

“It now presents guests with exceptional dining and entertaining experiences tailored to any occasion.”
