Step into 1950s Havana

It’s a spy satire filled to the brim with deliciously witty humour coming to you this May.

Presented by Howick Little Theatre and directed by Pam Browne, theatre show Our Man in Havana is based on the story of Jim Wormold – an underemployed vacuum cleaner salesman in 1950s Cuba who is struggling to pay for his teenage daughter’s extravagant lifestyle.

When British Secret Service asks him to become their “man in Havana”, he simply can’t afford to say no.

There’s just one problem – he doesn’t know anything!

In Clive Francis’ adapted version of the original Graham Greene novel, this hilarious story becomes a wonderfully funny and fast-moving romp.

Mrs Browne said preparations for the show began early this year, and she hopes the play will provoke deep thinking in audience members.

“This directing opportunity is really at the other end of the spectrum; this is a comedy drama with a diverse variety of characters played by eight actors in 45 scenes.

“Preparing a play is an extended process of absorbing artistic and technical creation from the whole team.

“The play develops as a thriller through some lovely comic scenes. I think the provoking of thought is often done indirectly through comedy then through a direct statement of facts.

“I hope the audience will enjoy this production and have a thoroughly good evening.”

Our Man in Havana screens May 6-27 at Howick Little Theatre.
