Gurmehar Bajwa, a year 12 student at Ormiston Senior College, has won The Kate Edger Charitable Trust 2021 competition, What Brings You Joy? with his poem entry Mudita.

The judges were really impressed with Gurmehar’s “emotionally driven, yet still formally well-structured” poem, that “captured the essence of joy, and left the reader feeling uplifted and engaged”.

Sarah McLeay and Katrina Ford from the Kate Edger Charitable Trust went along to Ormiston Senior College to meet Gurmehar and present him with his $1000 prize and certificate.

This is the fourth year the competition has been offered to year 12 and 13 students in Auckland and Northland.

In 1877, Kate Edger became the first woman in New Zealand to gain a university degree.

She was a great supporter of the Suffrage Movement and advocated strongly for women to use the vote to bring about change and improvement in society.
