Bookarama is coming soon and Howick Rotary need lots more books.
The signs are going up, the collectors are answering phone calls and the books are pouring in says Howick Rotarian John Osborne.
He encourages all Howickians to clear out their bookshelves and books stored in their garages and donate them to this year’s Bookarama.
“The more books we have for sale, the more Howick Rotary can fund to support local community activities,” says Osborne.
It’s that time of year again when Howick Rotary is again collecting and sorting books for the 19th annual Bookarama, the club’s main fundraiser. Proceeds go to a number of community projects in the Howick area.
“Once again the response to the request for book donations is fantastic and Rotarians are busy sorting books in preparation for the big sale week in October,” Osborne says.
This year there is a new venue for Bookarama which is to be held at Somerville Intermediate School in Somerville Road, Howick. This new venue provides a much larger hall where the books will be displayed over a greatly increased number of tables, allowing many more books to be displayed and reduce the need for booklovers to search through boxes underneath the tables. In addition to the much larger hall there is a large carpark for the public who will come in search of the special books or to gather together books for their next 12 months’ reading.
There will be books from all genres, from children’s books through to mind-boggling science fiction. Books will be categorised, and on the sale days there will be clearly identified category signage placed around the hall.
“The public is encouraged to empty their overflowing bookcases and storage lockers and donate unwanted books to Bookarama. Jigsaw puzzles, CDs, DVDs, and records are also keenly sought after by the shoppers and donations of these will also be greatly received,” says Osborne.
Howick Rotarians are now busy most days sorting books and, over the next few weeks, will spend hundreds of hours ensuring that quality books are ready for the sale, and those attending the book sale will also have the opportunity to search through many of the older books which may be of specific interest to those interested in classics.
This year the doors will be open from Wednesday October 9 to Saturday October 12 from 9am to 6pm, and Sunday 13th from 9am to 3pm.
