An east Auckland’s school dance group performed their way into an impressive finish at a recent cultural festival.
On March 24, Macleans College’s Bollywood Dance Group claimed second place in their category at Polyfest, a festival that celebrates the pride of cultural identity, and brings schools and the difference cultures between them, together.
The theme for this year’s Polyfest was whanau (family). Led by Rishita Raela, Margi Kaushik and Risha Sapaliga, the group portrayed this perfectly through their choreography and dancing.
The leaders managed the impressive feat of choosing the music, choreographing five separate traditional Indian dances, teaching the group in a short time-frame and preparing the dance costumes, Macleans College says.
“It is with much pride that the group gained second place in their category and the leaders also earned a perfect score in their introductory speech.”
The group members were: Lara Clarke, Amelie Gaxiola Nunez, Nimar Kaur, Margi Kaushik (leader), Vandita Kumar, Binuri Marasinghe, Rishita Rasela (leader), Adya Roop, Risha Sapaliga (leader), Deeksha Suresh and Plaksha Ummat.
