The People’s Choice artwork for the 15th Estuary Art & Ecology Awards was ‘Sink Skin’, by artist Alby Yap.
The award is proudly sponsored by the Rice Family Partnership who recognise the importance of the Estuary Art & Ecology Awards in bringing awareness of the damage to the estuary caused by urbanisation and development.
This year the award was late in presentation because of the Auckland Covid-19 lockdown.
‘Sink Skin’, the selected artwork, comprised an enamelled domestic sink, draped with latex, talc and rust. The artistic concept, described by Alby, was that of “the enamelled metal basin being converted into plasticity, rendering the unloved and overlooked object surprisingly fleshy, sensual and vulnerable, a little reminder of mortality”.
In making the award Wally Rice said, “It is always good to see so many creative entries well-supported by public votes which resulted in a tight contest amongst the participants.”
Rice congratulated Alby and said he enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about Alby’s work and aspirations.
Information on the 16th Estuary Art & Ecology Awards, again sponsored by the Howick Local Board, the Tāmaki Estuary Environmental Forum, the Wally Rice Family Partnership and Gordon Harris Art Supplies, will be released in the early new year.
