Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre is staging a retelling of the beloved play Romeo and Juliet featuring a cast of budding thespians.
It’s being performed by its Offstage Youth Theatre students aged 15 to 18 years old.
The theatre says they’ve been rehearsing since February and are ready for the curtain to be raised.
“The cast has risen to the challenges presented when bringing a Shakespearean production to life.
“Aside from the task of learning the art of delivering Shakespearian language, there have been a variety of new skills the cast has had to master, such a sword fighting, historical dancing, and physical characterisation.”
The production is directed by Kelly Raos, who says audiences will be transported to Shakespearean times through the use of traditional costumes designed and made by Howick local Marian Rocco.
“Many hours of research have been put in to ensuring the authenticity of each and every costume worn and an elaborate set has been designed by HCYT staff to reflect the historical period.”
Romeo and Juliet is staged at 7.30pm on May 30-31 and June 1 at Harlequin Theatre, 563 Pakuranga Road.
Tickets cost $12 and the production is suitable for people aged 12 and older.
