A local environmental champion has been publicly recognised for his efforts in the community.

Jim Duckworth, one of the founding members of the Friends of Mangemangeroa group, passed away on April 18.

At the Howick Local Board’s business meeting on May 16, member John Spiller moved an acknowledgement of Duckworth.

“Jim was one of the founding members of the Friends of Mangemangeroa, alongside Betty Harris, Austin Gate, Jack McKenzie, and Allan Riley,” Spiller said.

“His contributions to this group have been very significant over the last 25 years, inspiring others to join and contribute to the restoration of the Mangemangeroa Reserve.

“He will be long remembered for his local knowledge, willingness to assist in any way he could, and well-known generosity and hospitality (especially for his famous Eccles cakes).

“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, Judy, and family.”

As the Times reported previously, the Friends of Mangemangeroa honoured Duckworth and fellow group member Graham Falla with life membership last year for their dedication, spanning more than two decades, to the restoration of Mangemangeroa Reserve.

The award was intended to acknowledge the pair’s commitment, passion and invaluable contributions to the preservation of the unique ecosystem within the Mangemangeroa Valley.

Marion Skelton, chairperson of the Friends of Mangemangeroa, said their life membership was a well-deserved recognition of the countless hours they have devoted to planting and maintaining the reserve.

“We extend our appreciation for their unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions.”
