Howick, Pakuranga and surrounding districts next year mark the 175th anniversary of the Fencibles’ landing.
And among the variety of ways in which this momentous moment is being marked, Times Media has published a book, ‘Owairoa to Howick’.
It’s been a labour of love which has seen the publication of a large selection of newspaper columns printed in the Times over the past five years and penned by Howick historian Alan La Roche.
Times Media’s managing director Reay Neben is delighted with the book and believes everyone from the area will be keen to acquire a copy for posterity.
“As Howick and districts head into 2022 celebrating 175 years since the Fencibles arrived, it seemed timely that we publish most of the published history columns in one place,” Neben said.
“Editor Nick Krause had suggested a column for the paper to Alan la Roche back at the 170th anniversary and, as the saying goes, the rest is history.
“So this is five years’ work refined and now published.
Times graphic designers Clare McGillivray and Claire Robertson designed the style and put together the stunning result.
“Alan La Roche and his wife Coralie have been hugely supportive and have advised us during this process.
“The Times next year will celebrate publishing for 50 years so this is wonderful way to start a year of celebrations.”
The books are $39.95 and are available from:
