Macleans College’s Hillary House have once again outdone themselves in their fundraising efforts for the Himalayan Trust.
This year, Hillary House students committed once again to fundraising money for schooling, hospitals and healthcare in Nepal; a tradition of fundraising that stretches back 25 years.
Sir Edmund Hillary’s son, Peter Hillary, as well as Michael Gill, chairman of the Himalayan Trust, attended the school’s special assembly on Tuesday morning to receive the $8500 cheque.
The assembly began with a special powhiri (welcome) for special guests including members of the trust, followed by a musical performance.
In his eighth visit to the special assembly, Hillary thanked the school for their “wonderful long term connection” that has raised more than $40,000 in four years.
A speech by house captains Daniel Woo and Christina Huang discussed the importance of their year-long efforts in raising money in and out of school; with bake sales, movie nights and their Hillary Carnival fundraiser raking funds in.
“Those kids have the same hopes, dreams and potential as us, but not the same opportunities. We hope that our fundraising gives them a chance for some of the amazing opportunities that we have,” said co-captain Christina Huang.
The non-profit humanitarian organisation aims to reduce poverty and has been of paramount importance to members of the Everest Region for 58 years.
