Auckland Council local election voting period opens

Voting is now open for the 2019 Auckland Council local elections.

General Manager Democracy Services Marguerite Delbet says voting papers are being mailed out from today and should arrive by 25 September.

“Now is the chance for Aucklanders to help shape our region for years to come.

“There are plenty of resources available to help voters make informed decisions, including the pre-election report and the VoteAuckland elections website.”

Ms Delbet says voters can simply type their address into the website to find out who they can vote for in their local ward and board area.

“There’s detailed information about each candidate, including their background, why they chose to stand and what they hope to achieve if elected.”

Voters can also use the website to find their DHB and whether there’s a licensing trust in their area.

As the electoral roll is closed, Ms Delbet says people who aren’t enrolled or not enrolled at their current address will need to cast a special vote.

“Nobody should miss out on having their say.

“For our communities to thrive, we need as many people to vote as possible.”

There are a number of places people can cast special votes, including five Auckland libraries and nine council services centres. People can also phone the electoral officer on 0800 922 822.

Dozens of One Stop Shops will also pop up across the city throughout the election period, allowing people to enrol and vote at the same time.

Locations will include night markets, malls, marae and universities.

People will need to cast a special vote if their voting papers don’t arrive in the mail or their papers are damaged.

Voters who receive their voting papers in the mail can also drop their ballots at a One Stop Shop, rather than putting them in a post box.
