In efforts to clamp down on crime, the thin blue line is likely to become thicker on the streets of east Auckland.
Although local police were unavailable to comment, the Times understands recently announced changes to eligibility criteria will swell police ranks nationwide, including across the Counties Manukau East Area.
“We know elements of our selection criteria were creating unnecessary barriers for people who would otherwise make exceptional candidates,” Assistant Commissioner, Jill Rogers, says. “By allowing them to apply we can get them into the recruitment pipeline sooner.”
Applicants with restricted driver’s licences may now apply, however they will still need to obtain a full licence before starting their training. In addition, a residency visa enabling people to work in New Zealand will now be enough to join police ranks, a return to pre-2017 eligibility rules.
“These changes will allow many more people to apply to become New Zealand Police officers. However, the rigorous selection process for training at the Royal New Zealand Police College remains the same.”
Easing eligibility will help ensure law enforcement is fit for purpose, A/C Rogers adds.
“Increasing the number of officers in our communities is critical to our vision of New Zealand being the safest country. If you are looking for a job where you can be part of a great team of people, make a difference to your community and where no two days are the same, apply now!”
