After a two year break due to Covid, Howick Rotary’s 2022 Bookarama is underway at the Somerville Intermediate School.
This popular community event started on Wednesday afternoon with and early bird afternoon at which dealers and keen book enthusiasts pay an entry fee of $20 to get an early look at the selection of pre-loved donated books, puzzles, CDs DVDs and LPs on sale.
The general sale with no entry fee started on Thursday and is open from 9am to 6pm each day finishing on Sunday at 3pm so that the gymnasium can be cleared and ready for the start of school on Monday.
Even though the sale event has not occurred for two years, books have continued to be collected over the period which added to this year’s collections and resulted in a massive quantity of books to sort through and present to the public. This year’s event will be the largest ever and has involved the club in a herculean effort to stage it. Fortunately, Howick Coastguard – the club’s partner in the Fun Walk & Run event – was able to assist with the big shift of getting the books from storage to the school.
Bookarama has been going for more than 20 years and the cumulative money that has been raised exceeds $500,000 which in turn has supported the club’s efforts in the community of helping families in need, improving the environment, supporting heritage, helping young people develop their full potential, and assist local fun events.
