Maraetai Beach School has this afternoon, October 18, posted on its website that it’s been advised to go into lockdown.
“All staff and students are safe,” the school said.
“We will advise you as more information comes to hand.”
Local residents have posted on social media about the presence of armed police in Maraetai.
One person shared a screenshot of a text message the school sent to people at 1.55pm saying the school is in lockdown and to monitor the school’s website for updates.
A police spokesperson says: “This matter has been resolved.
“Police were in the area taking a person of interest into custody.
“This did not present a danger to the public, but the school was placed into lockdown briefly as a precaution.”
**UPDATE**
The school posted an update on the situation on its website from principal Mark Keenan after 2.30pm.
“We have come out of lockdown and all students, staff and persons on-site are safely accounted for,” he says.
“Everyone did extremely well and responded to instructions.
“A notice will be going out to parents/caregivers tonight to provide some more information about our emergency lockdown procedures.
“I would like to personally thank you for your support and trust during this difficult time.”
