After 18 months of design and siteworks, building work has begun on stage one of east Auckland’s newest retirement village project, Metlifecare’s Pohutukawa Landing in Beachlands.
Nestled at the heart of the Pohutukawa Coast, the unique $250 million project will deliver high-quality, design- and community-led retirement village living for people looking for independent coastal living, with the assurance of care into the future.
The 32 villas earmarked for stage one are scheduled for completion in mid-2021, with strong expressions of interest received for half the villas already.
“This strong response in our stage one homes before they’ve been released onto the open market reflects the great enthusiasm and momentum for the project within the local community,” said Metlifecare chief executive officer Glen Sowry. “There’s evidently a strong desire for the bespoke, community-focused urban design we’re offering in this unique pocket of Auckland.”
Designed by leading architects Peddlethorp Aiken, the village is one of Metlifecare’s four flagship new projects situated across the four corners of Auckland – the others are Fairway Gardens in Botany, Orion Point in Hobsonville and Gulf Rise at Red Beach.
Once completed, it will feature around 185 villas and apartments and offer the full continuum of care.
Sowry said Metlifecare’s central focus on resident wellbeing is reflected in the design of the village’s holistic wellness facilities and the planned suite of activities to boost physical and emotional health – from yoga and tai chi to woodworking and crafts. A Pohutukawa tree-lined boulevard will connect residents to the central amenities, which include restaurant, bar, library, indoor pool, spa and gymnasium.
“A spacious and predominantly low-rise village, Pohutukawa Landing celebrates its coastal location with carefully crafted open spaces, meandering walkways connecting the village with the broader community and a dedicated wetland park packed with birdlife,” he said.
“A short stroll to Pine Harbour Marina, residents will have the added advantage of a regular, direct 30-minute ferry service to the CBD, which is free for those with a valid SuperGold card.”
The local community has played an integral role in the development of Pohutukawa Landing, from choosing its name to inspiring the bountiful planting of grapes, olives and citrus trees in acknowledgement of the area’s rich agrarian history, he said.
“Pohutukawa Landing is uniquely designed for gathering and connection, reflecting the spirit of abundance that’s evident in this unique community.”
Pohutukawa Landing will be Metlifecare’s sixth village in the east/south Auckland region, sitting alongside Dannemora Gardens, Highlands, Edgewater Village, Longford Park (Takanini) and the highly anticipated Fairway Gardens at Pakuranga Golf Club in Golflands which is currently under construction and will be New Zealand’s first-ever retirement village to be located on a golf course.
“Significant investment is being made in the area with a comprehensive revitalisation project also underway to deliver 45 new apartments and a homestead model care home at Edgewater Village,” said Sowry.
“These developments will create a significant number of jobs for registered nurses, gardeners, caregivers, social coordinators and chefs.”
