The Howick Croquet Club stepped outside its comfort zone and dressed in Fencible-era costume to demonstrate their favourite game at the Howick Historical Village.
Bringing a modern version of on old fashioned game surprised the crowds visiting the Howick Historic Village last Sunday.
The traditional game of Association Croquet was first introduced to England from France about 1840, while the more modern (simpler and shorter) version called golf croquet was developed 25 years ago.
Such is its current appeal that several visitor families (each mum, dad and the kids) joined in with the croquet ladies to compete in games of golf croquet doubles on Sunday.
The Howick Croquet Club was established in 1907 although there are reports that croquet was played unofficially on the Howick Domain prior to that date.
To help celebrate 114 years in existence, ladies from the club played two games of golf croquet in the morning and two in the afternoon for a public display.
