Keeping our local community safe

Look out for one another, get to know your neighbours, and always report crime to the police were some of the key messages outlined at a public meeting hosted by Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga, on the subject of law and order.

“It was great to see so many locals turn up (last week) to discuss community safety and the problems we have in our area with those responsible for dealing with them,” says Mr Brown.

“Pakuranga is one of the safest areas to live in, with the eastern part of the Counties Manukau Police District recording the lowest levels of crime despite being the most populated area. This is a testament to the incredible work that our local police do, and they are ably assisted by our Community Patrols and Neighbourhood Support.”

“I was grateful to have representatives from all three of those organisations come along to talk about the work they do in the community, answer some questions on key concerns in our area, and offer some advice on what we can all do to help.”

Some of the key messages from police, Community Patrol, and Neighbourhood Support were:

  • Always report crime to the police by calling 111, even if you are worried it’s trivial. They will make decisions on the seriousness of an incident and respond appropriately, but there is little they can do if they’re not first aware of what is going on
  • Get to know your neighbours so you can more easily determine if something isn’t right when they may not be home
  • If you want to get involved, Community Patrol and Neighbourhood Support are always looking for more volunteers and ask very little of your time, so consider joining them to contribute towards our community’s safety

“We all deserve to feel safe in our homes, on our streets, and out in our community, and we all must do our part to ensure that’s something we can continue to enjoy,” says Brown.
