Our dams are slowly but surely filling up but are still way off water levels for this time of year.

But there is still more rain forecast over the next 24 hours, according to MetService which predicts frequent showers, possibly heavy and thundery with hail until tonight with rain forecast right through until mid-afternoon tomorrow. Strong westerlies with gales gusting to 110km/h are also forecast in exposed places.

Watercare today reported 11mm of rain fell in the Hunua Ranges yesterday bringing the total rain recorded for the past seven days to 40.5mm. In the Waitakere Ranges 12mm was recorded yesterday with 42mm falling in the past week.

Since the start of the drought in November, the region’s water catchments have received around 24 per cent less rainfall than normal.

Today the dams are 56.5 per cent full, up from 56.08 per cent yesterday. The normal capacity level for this time of year is 80.7 per cent.

Meanwhile, mandatory water restrictions remain in place. The water consumption target for July is 409 million litres or less a day. Yesterday’s consumption was 391m litres and the rolling seven-day average as at yesterday was 396m litres.
