More than 230 Bucklands Beach Intermediate School students have each spent part of a week camping in the South Waikato and doing everything from raft-building to climbing.
Some 117 students stayed at MiCamp Whakamaru – 30km south-east of Tokoroa – departed early morning Sunday March 11 and returned early evening Wednesday March 14. Around 120 of their school mates departed early morning Wednesday March 14 and returned evening Saturday March 17.
For more than 30 years, BBI has attended Motutapu Outdoor Education Camp but it is out of action due to damage sustained last year.
The school’s Debbie Allan said: “Teachers gave up a day in their weekend to ensure their Year 7 students experienced the opportunity to develop key life skills by spending a few days away from home and to strengthen their relationships with each other and their teachers.
“A highlight was providing every student with the opportunity to sleep in a tent for one night and to cook damper (a bread baked on a campfire).
Activities included raft-building and kayaking on Lake Whakamaru with other activities on a climbing wall and flying fox.
