There was rain forecast but the sun is shining brightly and that’s because our Kaumatua Koro Percy is looking down at us from the skies and smiling at us, said Matua Tapu (Pou Tikanga o Te Whanau Rautoetoe) at the blessing ceremony of the new playground at Riverina School last Thursday.

The school’s new playground, funded by various charities including the Lion Foundation and the Rae and Ernie Johnston Memorial Trust, has been dedicated to the memory of Kaumatua Koro Percy who passed away at the time the  funds were being raised for the playground.

Mr Tapu, along with students, sprinkled sacred water from Mt Taranaki on the grounds of the playground.

“The students have been waiting for a long time for the new playground to be officially opened,” said school principal Caroline Chawke.

The ribbon was cut by Sylvie Wilkinson of Pakuranga Rotary and the Rae and Ernie Johnston Memorial Trust, after which all the students were treated to ice cream.  Moments later, the kids were at play–making the most of the newly opened playground.
