Fallen remembered by school

Howick Intermediate School gathered for an Anzac Day ceremony last Wednesday.
  • By Amelie, Honey, Ruby and Mrs Hewlett – Howick Intermediate

On Wednesday April 13, Howick Intermediate held an Anzac ceremony, hosted by Honey, to commemorate not only those who fought at Gallipoli, Turkey, but all those who have and continue to fight for our country.

Despite the windy weather we gathered under the dome and listened to Mrs Pickering’s speech about this very day. Then the whole school sang the national anthem. Mr Roy told the school how his grandpa had travelled from Poland to New Zealand, on boat and by foot, with a lot of other kids and they ended up in Wellington as refugees.

After that two students from the literacy extension class said their poems on Anzac Day.

Next, we had a moment of silence followed by listening to The Last Post while the flag came down. Following that, Kath read For the Fallen.

Next, the flag went back up followed by Stella reading In Flanders Fields. Ruby, Kate, Denan and Bailey brought the wreaths to the flagpole, then Amelie gave her speech on prayer and remembrance.

As a whole school contribution, each class created wreaths to lay under the flagpole.

Everyone took this as a great reminder to be grateful to those who risked their lives for the present we have today.

It was a successful commemoration and we were lucky to be able to gather masked, under our dome to remember our soldiers.

It was such a great feeling to finally be all together after what has been a very long time without school assemblies.
