GKR Karate based on Aberfeldy Ave in Highland Park has held a pink belt fundraiser for The Cancer Society of New Zealand, raising more than $20,000.

For the month of November, the club’s students and instructors had the opportunity to purchase and wear a pink belt in replacement of their normal training belts with all proceeds going to the Cancer Society.

With well over 1000 pink belts sold throughout GKR New Zealand, the classes have been turning into a sea of pink instead of the many colours usually seen throughout a karate class.

November 25 saw a celebration class – Pink Power, where students wore their pink belts and worked on creating power in their techniques using kick shields, representing ‘Kicking Cancer to the Curb’.

“The club is extremely proud of its students and instructors for getting behind this hugely successful fundraiser and is pleased to have raised such a great sum for such an important charity,” said Nicola de Bruin of GKR Karate.
