HCYT to celebrate 40th anniversary reunion

LTR: Tim Slogrove (Pied Piper), Ben Edwards (Peter), Brooke Martin(Alisa) and Denika Clooney (Lottie) in HCYT’s play of Pied Piper.
LTR: Daniel Bailey (The Beast) and Kyla Gate-Hambrook (Beauty) are performing in Howick Children’s & Youth Theatre’s production of Beauty & The Beast.

Howick Children’s & Youth Theatre (HCYT) will be celebrating an important milestone.

Their 40 year anniversary reunion will be on Sunday 26th October, from 11.00am – 4.00pm at their premises at 29 Granger Road in Howick.

Initially administered by Uxbridge Community Projects Incorporated, the successful development and growth of these two theatre groups led to the decision to establish the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre Inc. as a separate society in 1996.

In 2007 HCYT was chosen by the then Manukau Council as the preferred tenants to utilise the premises in Granger Rd in Howick, where they still reside today.

The HCYT has had thousands of children treading the boards over the past decades.  Their drama classes are designed with a ‘learning through fun’ mindset. Their aim is to give children the skills they need to become more confident in themselves and their abilities.

“With that comes the chance to perform in the productions we stage for the public and it is the fond memories of these productions that many of our ex-students hold dear,” Michelle Field, the stage manager, says.

The exciting day is planned for past students, staff and their families to catch up with old drama friends and to share stories, browse the archives and take a trip down memory lane to celebrate their 40 years of children’s theatre in the local community.

A light lunch will be provided.

“There will no doubt a few theatre sport games played on the lawn,” Field says.

Spouses/partners and children of past students are welcome to attend.

There will be a small charge for adults, but no charge for children 12 years and under.

The last day to register is Friday September 17.

Anyone wishing to attend can register via the link on the HCYT Face

book page, or by emailing hcyt@xtra.co.nz for further information.

“We are very proud to have served the Howick community for such a long time, in such a positive way,” Field says.
