The Waterview Tunnel construction is one of eight Auckland finalists in the civil contracting industry’s equivalent of the academy awards being held in Dunedin next week.

The Civil Contractors New Zealand’s (CCNZ) four-day conference starts on August 2 and the highlight for all industry attendees will be the celebration of the CCNZ National Awards 2017 held on Friday, August 4.

The awards programme is comprised of three groups: the CCNZ Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards, the CCNZ Z People Awards and the CCNZ Connexis Company Awards.
As its title implies, the CCNZ Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards recognises excellence in the construction or maintenance of assets. It has five categories with 27 finalists.

Four Auckland projects are competing in the category for projects worth up to $5 million: the new tug berth structure at Waitemata Seaport by HEB Construction; the development of Le Roy’s Lookout at Birkenhead by Downers NZ; the new ferry pier at Half Moon Bay, also by Downer NZ; and the development at Kopupaka Reserve by ICB Retaining & Construction.

The Waterview Connection is up against two other finalists in the category for projects of more than $100 million: the Mackays to Pekapeka Expressway north of Wellington and the Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild.

Hirepool GM of Sales & Marketing, Gary Richardson, said his company’s gear had helped build some of New Zealand’s largest projects over the last 60 years, including the Waterview Connection.

“So we’ve seen the great work that these companies do up close, and it’s a natural fit and privilege for us sponsor these awards. The work these companies have done in all entries is a testament to the people in their teams so well done to them all.”

The Connexis Company Awards recognise employers that help staff to gain nationally recognised qualifications to create strong career pathways. Two of the finalists across four categories are ICB Retaining & Construction based in Rosedale and Johnstone Construction based in Remuera.

The Z People Awards celebrate great leadership in the civil construction sector. James Dawson, 30, a cadet quality surveyor / junior project manager at Johnstone Construction is a finalist in the Training Development Award. This award recognises individuals who have developed a career path and taken on offered training opportunities.

The Z People Awards and Connexis Company Awards will be announced at a lunch on Friday 4thAugust while the Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards will be announced at a formal dinner that evening.

CCNZ CEO Peter Silcock said the awards were an annual highlight for the civil construction industry and a chance to celebrate the extremely hard and dedicated work that CCNZ members undertook on every project.

“Our members create the backbone of the nation and the awards are a way to say ‘thanks for doing a wonderful job, we really appreciate what you do for your communities’.”
