After two years of cancellations due to Covid, the Upper North Island Secondary Schools (UNISS) competition was able to get underway again at Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre.
“The weather played a big part in setting the scene for an amazing tournament last week,” said Amanda Dyason, president of the Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre.
“The courts were buzzing with excitement all week and it was great to see our facility at full capacity and local accommodation and businesses also in hot demand.”
Howick College went down to a very slick Hamilton Girls side 26-16 after beating Saint Kentigern College 32-28 in the semi-final to make the A grade final.
A total of 114 teams competed in four grades over the five days with the top six teams in A grade travelling to Porirua October 11-14 to compete in the NZ Secondary School Competition.
Howick College and Saint Kentigern College will be two of these teams along with Hamilton Girls High, Avondale College, St Peters School and Trident High School.
Seven players of the 20 named for the A grade tournament selection team were from Howick College and Saint Kentigern College.
Selected were Lili Tokaduadua, Eseta Waqira and Brooklyn Murray from Howick and Sophie Lafaiali’l, Keeley-Marie Samuel, Khanye-Li Munroe-Nonoa and Charlotte Manley from St Kents. Brooklyn Fa’asu from Edgewater College made the D Grade tournament selection team.
Macleans College finished 25th place in A grade, Botany Downs Secondary College 15th in B grade, Pakuranga College 20th in B grade and Sancta Maria College 25th in B grade.
Elim Christian College finished 5th in C grade which will see them moving to B grade for the 2023 tournament while Edgewater finished 13th in D grade.
