The top three apprentices from both the Auckland and Northern regions have been announced for the 2022 Registered Master Builders’ Carters Apprentince of the Year competition, with Buckland Beach’s Jack Nevines claiming third in Auckland.

For the regional competition, each apprentice had to submit details of a building project they were working on as well as take part in a two-hour practical challenge.

The top 10 participants from each region then progressed to an interview stage with a judging panel and an onsite visit to discuss their building project in detail.

Nevines competed with other local apprentices at the Regional Practical Challenge at Carters East Tamaki store in late June. He represented Howick’s Faulkner Construction.

Ross Faulkner, managing director, described Nevines as a “confident guy.”

“He gets on with it, does his thing and does it well. He’s a fast learner.”

The judges shared similar sentiments of Nevines character and experience: “Jack’s submission was polished and of a high standard.

He spoke with confidence through his walk through. All in all, Jack showed excellent knowledge of his job and its more complicated aspects.”

The top apprentice from each region will go on to compete in the national competition.

The winner for Auckland’s regional competition was Dan Schnell from Avondale, representing Coastal Concepts.

Beach Haven’s Paulo Oliveira clinched first in the northern regional competition, representing TP Builders.
