It’s all about graduating with flying colours.
Thirty-five students from NZ Fashion Tech were given a fashion paint colour from Resene.
Within four weeks 35 intricately detailed looks were woven, smocked, crushed, quilted, embroidered, draped, pleated and bunched into extraordinary works of silk.
The top 17 were selected by judges to show on the Resene Designer Runway this Fashion Week and include Amber Sterritt and Tessa Gould. Both went to Howick College and live in Howick and Beachlands respectively.
Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour of Fashion brings to life a collection designed and constructed by New Zealand’s freshest young design talent. Their work is inspired by a brief which takes their creative thought into an edgy contemporary world of colour and design, refuses ‘to bow to the convention of ordinary’ and embodies uplifting themes of feminine empowerment.
On judging day last week, judges Doris de Pont, Resene marketing manager Karen Warman, Founder of NZ Fashion Tech Val Marshall-Smith and guest judge Janey Evett of New Zealand Fashion Week tried to narrow the finalists down to 15. It was too hard.
They heard thoughtful, creative and broad-ranging design stories citing inspiration as diverse as a Mediterranean shellfish, Paris glitterati, a comfy green couch and Louis XIV.
This is a project where Resene collaborates with the New Zealand Institute of Fashion Technology (NZ Fashion Tech).
Together they give NZ Fashion Tech undergrads in their final year of study in Auckland and Wellington a chance to be part of a professional fashion shoot, direct their own portfolio photos behind the camera, appear in media coverage and feature in an on-line gallery hosted by Resene.
This group of 17 young designers will attend the opening Resene Designer Runway show with models who are wearing their designs stepping onto the runway first.
The winner of Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour of Fashion 2018 will be announced at Fashion Week and they will receive a new industrial sewing machine and an engraved pair of shears of the highest quality, gifted by Resene. Fashion Week runs from August 27 – September 2.
