Maritime Police would like to remind boaties that they must carry lifejackets on board at all times. The reminder comes as three out of six boats on Auckland’s North Shore which were checked on Wednesday morning, were found not to be carrying any lifejackets at all.
“Every vessel must carry a fit-for-purpose lifejacket for every passenger on board. And if you’re in a vessel that is less than 6 metres long you must be wearing it,” said Senior Constable Peter Comer, Auckland Maritime Police.
“The weather is warm and a lot of people are still on holiday which means there are more boaties out on the water. We want people to enjoy themselves, but to do it safely and encourage all boaties to follow the Boating Safety Code – it could save your life,” he said.

Boats, especially ones under six metres in length, can sink very quickly.
Wearing a life jacket increases your survival time in the water.

Take two separate waterproof ways of communicating so we can help you if you get into difficulties.
3. Marine Weather
New Zealand’s weather can be highly unpredictable.
Check the local marine weather forecast before you go and expect both weather and sea state changes.
4. Avoid Alcohol
Safe boating and alcohol do not mix.
Things can change quickly on the water.
You need to stay alert and aware.
5. Skipper Responsibility
The skipper is responsible for the safety or everyone on board and for the safe operation of the boat.
Stay within the limits of your vessel and your experience.
Boaties should always leave their trip intentions with a person on shore so an alarm can be raised when you are overdue, or better still – log a Trip Report with Coastguard.
