A national chess tournament which is to be held in Howick from Friday bears the name of one of Howick’s best-known identities and businessmen.

The Ross Spiller Memorial tournament – the New Zealand Seniors & Veterans Chess Championships – begins on Friday and concludes on Sunday at the Howick Chess Centre in Central Terrace.

Organised by Ross’s son Paul Spiller, the vice-president of the New Zealand Chess Federation and president of the Oceania zone, there is a maximum limit of 26 players at venue, the new Howick Chess Centre.

Meanwhile, Spiller is already organising the Asian Seniors Chess Championships at the Auckland Rose Park Hotel in Parnell (opposite the Parnell Rose Gardens) from October 15 to 21.

“This event is not likely to come back to New Zealand for many years and offers opportunities for international titles and norms,” Spiller said.

“Players from India, the Philippines and Australia have already entered.”
