Back at home had the Pakuranga United Rugby Club Premiers revved up for a good performance against Grammar Tec as we come to the pointy end of the season.
Wanting to keep our position on the table intact, this was an important game to ensure this was the case.
Disappointingly we started slowly again and were pushed into our 22 for a sustained period of time
Twelve minutes on they crossed the line and converted to give them the early lead.
Still not on our game this trend continued for the next 12 minutes and in this time they added a further six points with two penalties.
Grammar Tec kept applying pressure which was absorbed and finally we got our mojo back and got back into the game.
Some great defence changed the flow and five minutes later Harlyn Saunoa showed some good pace and evasion for a good winger’s try. Converted by George Sims.
The game continued in the middle of the field going back and forth and just before the break Pakuranga was awarded a penalty. Converted by George Sims which concluded the half at 13-10.
The second half started with some great rugby by both teams and defense was the order of the first 10 minutes.
Pakuranga worked their way to the 22 of Grammar Tec and were awarded a penalty on the 22, 15 metres in.
Michaile Van Wyk who sensed an opportunity with Grammar Tec slow to react, he tapped the ball and was away with great pace and evasion to score under the post untouched. Converted by George Sims.
Pakuranga continued with some good play holding on to possession and dominating play.
The key was no mistake rugby and holding possession fighting for every inch which again paid dividends with Sione Takai crashing over the try line with assistance of the Pakuranga forwards. Converted by George Sims.
As expected Grammar Tec continued to play and had ample possession to make things happen, but for the dogged determination of this Pakuranga’s defense which managed to keep the slate clean for the entire second half.
This was a great effort and the home crowd gave them a rousing cheer at the end of the game as Pakuranga won 24-13.
Players of note were Paz Dunn who was player of the day as the midfield defense was punishing closely supported by his brother and inside back Tane Dunn.
Other credible mentions were George Sims and Randle Baker.
Of special note, this was the last game for Sione Takai who is off to join the Tongan national team in the upcoming Pacific cup. We wish him all the best.
We are at home again against Marist so hope to see everyone down at the club for a break during the long weekend.
