Pharmacy suffers second break-in

The unidentified burgular used a large rock to smash through the pharmacy’s glass entrance.

An east Auckland pharmacy has suffered a second break-in in less than three weeks.

At 5.48am on Saturday April 2, a man threw a large rock through the glass door of Unichem Pakuranga in Cortina Place.

This occurred 16 days after the first burglary ( Times, March 22) where an unidentified figure used the base of a vaccination flag to shatter the same entrance.

The door had been replaced from damage in the first break-in.

In footage seen by the Times, the burglar, dressed in dark clothes, gloves and a hoodie, rushed into the pharmacy and attempted to use a drill to open the safe.

Unsuccessful, he then took the tills from behind reception. The tills were later found in a park nearby. He exited the pharmacy at 5.49am.

Vicky Chan, the centre manager of Unichem Pakuranga, says she and her staff are feeling “uncertain, angry and unsafe”.

“It does look like the same person,” she says. “He went straight into the safe with the tools he brought.”

Police are currently making enquiries to identify those responsible.

“A number of items have been taken from the store,” a police spokesperson says.

Chan says that it’s a timely reminder for all small businesses to renew their security systems.

“We are all exposed to things like this.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Police on 105, quoting file number 220402/8597 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
