Building materials supplier PlaceMakers Pakuranga is offering free water to those whose water tanks have run dry.

Many residents in Whitford, Beachlands, Maraetai and Clevedon are feeling the effects of the drought and some have run out of water or a perilously close.

The problem is exacerbated as water suppliers have become overwhelmed by demand with waiting times of up to five weeks.

From tomorrow morning (Friday) the PlaceMakers Pakuranga branch will allow drought-affected residents to take water with a maximum limit of 1000 litres.

Branch operator Bob Barsdell told the Times the idea arose as some staff were affected by the drought conditions.

“We’ve got some people directly affected. There’s little cost involved and it’s of benefit to the community,” Barsdell said.

“It’s really about engaging and helping people in need.”

Meanwhile, Auckland Council has been providing support for rural communities during this prolonged period of dry weather.

The local community water collection site is Te Puru Community Centre, 954R Whitford-Maraetai Road, Beachlands from 10am – 8pm.

Water is available to be collected for domestic use. Residents can take up to 20 litres of water per person in their household per day, in handheld containers.

Water refills will begin at 7am, Friday February 21, PlaceMakers Pakuranga, 418 Pakuranga Road. Limit 1000 litres per fill.
