Police have issued a statement regarding the investigation into an alleged incident reported in Northpark more than a month ago.

They revealed on June 5 they were in the very early stages of an investigation into an incident in the suburb reported the previous night.

“Enquiries are under way to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this incident,” a police spokesperson said at the time.

“A scene examination has been completed and there will be an increased police presence in the area as we conduct enquiries.”

People posted on local community Facebook pages that multiple police cars and an ambulance were at a location in Millhouse Drive.

A person commented anonymously the incident related to a schoolgirl who had been abducted. Police did not confirm that is the case.

On June 6 police said a young person had received medical care and was back with his or her family.

Police said they wanted to hear from anyone with information that may help them establish what happened.

Officers have visited homes and businesses along Millhouse Drive to speak to residents and workers and to ask if they have CCTV footage of the area.

In the days since news of the incident became public the Times was approached by several dozen local parents asking if it’s true that a girl was abducted and if they need to be more cautious regarding their child’s safety.

Police had been tight-lipped since then, saying only that the investigation was ongoing.

Today, July 18, police issued a new update to the Times.

Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers, of Counties Manukau Police criminal investigation branch, says: “We are aware there has been justified concern around an incident that reportedly occurred on Millhouse Drive, Northpark.

“Police received a report of a person located with injuries at the location, and they were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

“The investigation response was tailored to a stranger attack on a young woman.

“We are now in a position to provide the community with an update after Counties Manukau East Police carried out a thorough investigation.

“We are aware of the speculation surrounding what is said to have occurred, however based on our investigation we believe this particular incident has now been resolved.

“Police are satisfied that no offending occurred and are not looking for anyone else.

“At this point, our enquiries into this matter have concluded.

“We would like to thank the local community for their assistance during our investigation.”
