Police are appealing to the public for information after an east Auckland store owner was allegedly struck during a confrontation with two people who had taken items from the business.

Sergeant Brett Meale of Howick police says an investigation is under way into a shoplifting incident at a Howick store on December 3.

“At about 2.45pm a man and woman entered the store in Central Terrace,” Meale says.

“After a period of time, the pair exited the store with bags full of stock.

“The store owner has challenged this pair as they had not paid for the goods.

“An altercation has occurred, which has resulted in the store owner being slapped on the shoulder.

“The pair left the scene and fortunately the shop owner did not sustain any injuries as a result.”

Meale says police inquiries into the incident are ongoing and include examining CCTV from the area.

“The pair’s actions are incredibly disappointing,” he says.

“We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen them acting suspiciously in the Howick area at the time.”

People with information on the incident or the suspects can phone police on 105 quoting the file number 211203/4341 or phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.
