Hundreds of parents, grandparents, school principals, teachers, aunts, uncles and siblings at Farm Cove Intermediate School, have celebrated another successful year of the Koanga Spring Festival.
The celebration of local schools’ kapa haka groups has run for 27 years and this year students from 27 schools put up power-packed performances at Farm Cove Intermediate on Friday.
The performances were held at both the school gymnasium and hall to accommodate the steady stream of spectators.
Farm Cove Intermediate performed waiata (song) at a powhiri (welcoming ceremony), opening the Koanga Spring Festival 2018.
Months of hard work and training unfolded as primary and intermediate schools as well as secondary colleges performed the waiata, and kapa haka groups accompanied by guitarists won the audiences over with their enchanting performances.
The koha received goes back into the community supporting Owairoa ‘Garden of Memories’ and Matariki Marae.
Koanga means spring time and the festival truly celebrated the turn of seasons with a range of captivating Maori cultural performances.
