East Auckland motorists may not know there are nine red-light cameras operating at local intersections and running one will result in a $150 fine.
Auckland Transport (AT) says the city is a ‘Vision Zero’ region, which means the agency is committed to a goal of no deaths or serious injuries on the roads by 2050.
“This means as people, we all make mistakes, but a mistake should not cost a life or cause serious injury on our roads.
“AT is committed to raising awareness of the dangers of crashes at intersections and for drivers to adopt safe road behaviour relating to intersection safety.
“There is an unacceptable number of people being killed or seriously injured on Auckland’s roads. One road death is one too many.”
The agency is running a campaign to address the problem of motorists running red lights at intersections.
It consists of reminders to encourage people to do the right thing and issuing $150 fines if a vehicle fails to stop at a red light.
Red-light cameras are in place at “high-risk” intersections across the city.
Locally they’re situated at the following intersections:
- Ormiston Road/ Murphys Road
- Pakuranga Road/ Aviemore Road
- Pakuranga Road/ Pigeon Mountain Road
- Pakuranga Road/ Reeves Road
- Te Irirangi Drive north-bound/ Accent Drive
- Te Irirangi Drive south-bound/ Accent Drive
- Te Irirangi Road/ Smales Road
- Ti Rakau Drive/ Botany Road
A red light camera operated by police is also located at the intersection of Ti Rakau Drive and Te Irirangi Drive in Botany.
