Something for nothing? How about a Give & Take Second Hand Party?

We all love garage sales! What if you could go to a giant garage sale and everything was free?

Cession Community Trust has come up with an idea that, with a bit of “give and take”, puts a smile on everyone’s face.

People are invited to bring their boxes and bags and come along to Cession Community’s Give & Take Second Hand Party which is happening this Saturday August 31 from 10am – 2pm at the Depot in Lloyd Elsmore Park. It’s a unique community event where no money changes hands, but the wider community benefits.

We all have valuable items that have some life left in them that we never get around to selling online — but it’s taking up space. And we all have things that we need that we just can’t afford. What if there was a place you could bring what you no longer need and take what would really make a difference for your life? That’s the Give and Take Party — people giving, people taking.

While people are shopping for what they need, they’ll be able to purchase delicious treats from the bake sale fundraiser run by cession|community’s Cultivate Kids to the work of Humanity NZ with the homeless.

There are some great partnerships on both sides of the “give and take”. A number of sponsors have come to the party offering support for the event including Dress For Success Auckland.

Cession Community Playgroup coordinator Katie Buckley describes the great fit. “Dress For Success is supporting over 1500 women each year to secure employment, allowing them to provide for their families and contribute positively to our communities. This is one of the primary needs Cession Community Trust identified in a recent survey of women in the community – it’s great to be partnering with Dress For Success with this year’s Give & Take Party and continuing to give families a hand up.”

Moore Street Bakehouse has generously donated product to the bake sale which will directly benefit the homeless through Humanity NZ. New World is providing a selection of cupcakes that kids will be able to decorate and sell through the bake sale.

On the receiving side a number of organisations are benefiting including Middlemore Kids’ First Unit which has a desperate need for books at the moment on the ward. Blankets and warm clothes will find a home through Humanity NZ. The Salvation Army will be receiving all the leftover items for sale through their opportunity shop in Botany for distribution to those in need.

People with clothing or toys to donate can bring them to The Depot on Friday August 30 from 9.30am – 11am or on the day, Saturday August 31 from 9am onwards. The Give & Take Second Party would love to gift your men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, accessories, bags, toys of useable quality. They will not be able to take toiletries, cosmetics, electrical goods and bric-a-brac this time.

Organisers are inviting people to come to receive regardless of whether they have anything to give. It’s people, helping people, help people.
