Success story for Shakespeare students

Stage blood, ominous scenes and dangerous witches – it’s all in a day’s work for the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare team from Howick College.

The team recently took out the top spot in the 15 minute category of the Shakespeare’s Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ) University of Otago Sheilah Winn South and East competition, held at Botany College on Sunday, April 2.

Created by Howick College head of drama and expressive arts, Jillian Dryden, the school’s interpretation and performance of Macbeth won over the judges, and will now be performed by the team in Wellington in June for the national competition.

Team member Lachlan Stanghan said the competition offered an incredible chance to be part of the wider drama community and to see how others interpreted their pieces.

“It was like an impromptu community formed around Shakespeare,” he said.

The team of eight year 13 students who competed were Madi Hewett, Erica Harrison, Jessica Bennett, Sabina De Lange, Scarlett Edwards, Sebastian Rowse, Kimberley Langevad and Lachlan Stanghan.
