Kiwi motorsport star and former east Auckland local Shane can Gisbergen has taken out back-to-back wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in the United States.

Last week van Gisbergen, who attended Saint Kentigern College in Pakuranga, earned victory at a road course in Oregon.

He’s followed that up this weekend by winning the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 road course race at Sonoma Raceway in California.

“Back to back Xfinity wins!” he posted on Facebook after the race.

“Awesome to get one in the WeatherTech Camaro, had some hard racing and great fun.”

The 35-year-old started the race on pole position in his No. 97 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet.

He went on to win by just over one second ahead of fellow driver Sheldon Creed to earn his second victory in the Xfinity series.

“What a race — an adventure up and down and up and down all day,” an elated van Gisbergen told NASCAR.

“That last restart I was just giving it all I had and two guys going for the same real estate came together.

“It was pretty awesome though, a lot of fun.

“Hope everyone enjoyed the show. Pretty awesome back-to-back weeks for us.”

The NASCAR Xfinity Series now moves to Iowa Speedway for the HyVee Perks 250.
